Student Volunteers Shadow at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital

During the trips, there is an opportunity for the student volunteers to shadow physicians in the fields of Surgery, Pediatrics, labor and delivery, and Emergency cases at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

In the Winter 2020 trip, students from Cornell University learned about how healthcare is delivered in Ghana under the mentorship of Dr. Chris Oppong, Dr. Maxwell Osei-Ampofo and Dr. Cynthia Amponsah. The physicians ensured that the students understood what they were doing by answering their questions and offering insights to the reasons why things are being done that way.

This experience helped students to understand how healthcare is delivered in Ghana and also gave them the opportunity to understand the population OKB serves.

Cultural Immersion

During their visit, volunteers are exposed to and immersed in Ghanaian culture. There are opportunities to spend time with those in the community, enjoy the food and sight-see

Some of the activities include visits to the Elmina Castle, Kakum National Park, Mole National Park and more.

Health Education and Screenings

The volunteers help to provide free health screenings to those in the local community. In the past, they have also educated over 600 families about the risks of hypertension and diabetes and how they can avoid it with lifestyle modifications.

Some of the renowned physicians that participated in the events are as follows:

Dr. Michael Wiafe-Akenteng – Nutritionist

Dr. Alfred Kobi – General Physician

Dr. Kweku-Duah – Optometrist

Dr. Hannah Osei-Bonsu – Dentist

Dr. Chris Oppong – Emergency Physician
